Ever ask yourself that question? Perhaps the more helpful question is “where am I?” and, “and where would I like to go?”
It’s just about the end of the year. And I keep wondering, ‘how did I get here?’ Endings and beginnings can be quite powerful. One of my favorite ideas about change is Bill Bridges, and goes something like, ‘every change begins with an ending and ends with a beginning.’
As we approach the end of 2016, and look forward to 2017, I’m trying to shift away from the question that has been bouncing around my head for the past few weeks, “how did I get here? “ Instead, I’m looking forward, while taking time to check behind me and gather all that I learned.
Here ‘s your challenge for the end of this year. Sit down with paper and pen. Your favorite pen. Maybe one that has your favorite color ink. The writing part is important. Your brain is challenged differently when you write than when you type. So paper and your favorite pen or pencil. And answer this question:
As you cross from this year into the next, what are you taking with you, and what are you leaving behind?
Use this to frame your intentions for the new year. Being clear about what you are taking with you supports you in continuing to do more of the stuff that brought you peace, and joy, and a sense of accomplishment, and satisfaction. It supports you in leaving behind the stuff that left dissatisfied. It supports a focus on intentions, and impact, and, I hope, positivity.
Happy endings. Happy new beginnings.
With gratitude,
Vicki
